Preseason Outlook

Anderson officially out for season: QB Derek Anderson's season is officially over, yet another slap for the down-on-their-luck Browns. Anderson, who lost his starting job to Brady Quinn several weeks ago, will miss the final four games after tearing a ligament in his left knee Week 13 against Indianapolis. An MRI taken Monday revealed Anderson tore the medial collateral ligament when he was sacked in the final minutes of Cleveland's 10-6 loss to the Colts. Anderson, making his first start since Nov. 2 after being benched for Quinn, will not need surgery. He will be placed in a brace and will need four to six weeks to recover.

Fantasy Analysis

Anderson had a miserable 2008 season after making the Pro Bowl last season. Feel free to release him, and don't expect his replacement, Ken Dorsey, to make much of a Fantasy impact either. The Browns likely will place Anderson on injured reserve in the coming days.

You gotta love the NFL: Derek Anderson went from unknown to Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback and a Fantasy hero plucked off the waiver wire in early 2007. His constant gunning and connecting with Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow helped pave the way for him to throw for nearly 3,800 yards with 29 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with another three scores on the run last year. Armed with a new contract, Anderson will not only have the task of beating those stats, but will have the added firepower in WR Donte Stallworth to do so. He's just outside of the top-five Fantasy QBs out there thanks in part to shaky preseason play and a preseason concussion, but he has arrived as a reliable No. 1 option so long as the rest of his offensive teammates in Cleveland stay healthy. Expect him to fly off draft boards once the likes of Drew Brees and Carson Palmer get picked on Draft Day, making him a likely pick between Rounds 5 and 6.
