Preseason Outlook

Maroney said shoulder was painful: Patriots RB Laurence Maroney said Monday he was playing in pain after sustaining the injury to his shoulder in the team's Sept. 14 win over the Jets in Week 2, and he was about to start a nine-month program to "get stronger" and "get better," reports the Boston Herald. When asked if he was surprised to be on season-ending injured reserve, Maroney shot back: "I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did . . . when the details come out, you'll be surprised that I went that long." Maroney agreed that going on injured reserve Oct. 20 was for the best.

Fantasy Analysis

Maroney should not be owned in any leagues at this time, but keep an eye on what happens with him during the offseason and if he returns to New England next season. As of now, Maroney has minimal Fantasy value in keeper formats because of his injury and uncertainty of his future with the Patriots.

Losing Tom Brady was just the first of the Patriots' problems. Now they're wondering just how good, or bad, they really are.

Laurence Maroney is the wild card in Fantasy drafts this summer. After being practically invisible for the first 14 weeks of the 2007 season, Maroney erupted in a poor-weather game in Week 15 and finished the season and postseason strong. The Patriots are likely to run a little more in 2008 to take some of the defensive pressure off of Tom Brady, but that doesn't mean Maroney will get 20 or even 15 carries per game. However, there's no denying Maroney's ability -- so long as he's healthy, he'll be involved to some extent. Most owners will grab him with a second-round pick, but he's safer as a third-to-fourth round choice as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy RB.
